Loosening the Reins: A Gentler Way of Being With Ourselves
One of the themes that comes up again and again in coaching conversations with women is the amount of pressure we place on ourselves. Many of us carry an internal expectation that we should be able to do it all, hold it all together, and somehow manage life's responsibilities with grace and ease.
We strive to be productive, dependable, capable, and available to everyone around us. We want to do good work, be supportive partners and friends, care for our families, contribute to our communities, and pursue the things that matter most to us. These are beautiful qualities, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to live a meaningful and responsible life.
However, somewhere along the way, many women begin to believe that their worth is connected to how much they accomplish, how much they give, or how perfectly they manage everything that comes their way. The pressure becomes internalized. Even when no one else is asking more of us, we continue asking more of ourselves.
Over time, that constant striving can become exhausting. It can leave us feeling stressed, disconnected, and unable to fully enjoy the lives we are working so hard to create.
I don't believe the answer is to stop caring, stop contributing, or withdraw from life's responsibilities. Most of us have full and meaningful lives, and many of the things we do are important and deeply valued. The invitation is not necessarily to do less, but to relate to ourselves differently as we move through our lives.
Can we be productive without constantly pushing ourselves?
Can we be responsible without criticizing ourselves?
Can we pursue meaningful goals while also extending ourselves compassion and understanding?
Can we allow ourselves moments to pause, breathe, and simply be?
I believe we can.
Nature offers us a beautiful reminder that life unfolds in rhythms and seasons. Trees do not bloom year-round, and the earth itself moves through cycles of growth, rest, renewal, and transformation. We are part of nature, yet many of us have forgotten that we, too, need time to slow down, regroup, and reconnect with ourselves.
When we spend time in nature, something often begins to soften. The constant pressure eases. We become more grounded, more present, and more able to hear our own inner wisdom beneath the noise and demands of daily life.
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is permission to loosen the reins a little. To recognize that we do not have to earn rest. To remember that we are worthy not because of what we produce, but simply because we are here.
We can continue to show up for our families, our work, and the things we care about while also learning to show up for ourselves. We can become women who are not constantly at war with themselves, but women who are on their own side. Women who belong to themselves.
This desire to slow down, reconnect, and find a gentler way of being with ourselves is one of the reasons I created the Rooted Wisdom Summer Nature Journey.
Over six weeks, women gather in community and spend intentional time in nature. Together, we explore grounding practices, gratitude, self-compassion, plant and bird identification, meaningful conversation, and the simple healing that can come from stepping away from the pace and pressure of everyday life.
The journey is not about becoming someone new. Rather, it is an opportunity to remember who we are underneath all the striving. It is a chance to reconnect with ourselves, with nature, and with other women who understand the challenges and gifts of living fully in today's world.
My hope is that each woman who participates leaves with a deeper sense of peace, belonging, and trust in herself. That she remembers she does not have to do everything perfectly. That she discovers she can be both strong and soft, responsible and rested, productive and compassionate.
Perhaps most importantly, I hope she remembers that she deserves to experience the same love, care, and understanding that she so freely offers to others.
